A look at the pictures in this writeup tells you most of what you need to know. This outfitter’s clients harvest huge mule deer in the 170” to 200” class, and he does it with consistency. If you have been collecting Colorado preference points, then this is an excellent option. You can draw this hunt usually with 5 to 9 points, or he can provide you with a landowner voucher to guarantee a tag, but this adds to the cost and the vouchers are very limited (and usually spoken for a year in advance). He hunts over 14,000 acres of private land (Unit #83) in an area where not a lot of tags are issued. So very little pressure on the deer, and this outfitter normally takes only 7 to 8 hunters per year, including bow, rifle and muzzleloader, to ensure that his properties are no over-hunted. BE SURE TO TALK WITH US BEFORE APPLYING FOR THE TAG AS HE OFTEN IS FULL BEFORE THE DRAW TAKES PLACE!
Another point in favor of this outfit is that he is basically a one-man show – the outfitter normally personally guides all the hunters, and it is also normally a 1×1 hunt, meaning one hunter per guide (him). This ensures personal service and an experienced guy who knows the deer, knows the terrain, and knows the tactics that work. And you are hunting 100% of the time for yourself. The formula works well, as the pictures demonstrate.
In terms of success, he normally runs 100% on HARVEST, not just opportunity! Luck of course always plays a role, especially for deer over 180”, but he produces them with consistency (although he will never guarantee anyone a 200” class deer). However, he knows his stuff, and the big guys are in that area of Colorado. He hunts hard, but the hunt is physically relatively easy. You typically glass from the vehicle until you find a suitable deer, and then make a stalk. He does have a few areas that require a hike to get into, if you are up for that.
The outfitter boasts a 100% record for both opportunity and harvest. Of course, luck always plays a role, especially when it comes to trophy deer over 180-inches. But the outfitter produces them with amazing consistency!
