PLAINS AND DANGEROUS GAME – MOZAMBIQUE #279

PLAINS AND DANGEROUS GAME – MOZAMBIQUE #279

When we hunted Mozambique, while we had known of its awesome buffalo hunting beforehand, we were blown away by the incredible quantity and variety of plains game, plus the huge herds of buffalo, and the very wild and primitive feel of the country. The diversity of the habitat here lends a great deal of interest to the hunting, and means you can find a wide variety of species co-existing together in close proximity. It is one of the few areas remaining in Africa where you can still do the REAL Classic East African Safari today. Our clients have echoed our feelings, and success has been extremely high and the smiles extremely wide. We work with a number of quality Mozambique operations, located in various regions of that country and this is one of them. This outfit hunts two different “Coutadas” (hunt concessions).

IMG_1186-300x200 We have known and worked with this operator in a number of locations and countries, and since 2012 in Mozambique. He runs an excellent operation. He also runs an excellent camp with great fellow PHs as well. This is a top-notch outfit hunting a really excellent area, and doing it well with very qualified Professional Hunters to help you on every step along the way. Hunt here and you will hunt where the famed Harry Manners and Wally Johnson often hunted, back in the heyday of the great safaris.

CONCESSION AND SPECIES
His first concession is Coutada 10 and encompasses more than 500,000 square miles, including 28 miles of coastline on the Indian Ocean. The topography ranges from the floodplains of the Zambezi River, to grasslands, broadleaf forests and swamps. Species found in Coutada 10 include Cape buffalo, sable, water buck, leopard, lion, elephant, hippo and crocodile, plus suni, oribi, nyala, Lichtenstein hartebeest, Chobe bushbuck and a variety of plains game – really too many to enumerate here. Importantly this concession borders a huge free-roaming buffalo preserve where no hunting allowed, ensuring a plentiful supply of fresh buffalo regularly!
His second concession is Coutada do Nairoto. It is located in drier country and it also where they do elephant and lion hunts, plus buffalo and leopard.

SEASONS
Mozambique is a warm, tropical climate with average temperatures around 80 degrees. The period of May through September tends to have the coolest temperatures, so most hunting takes place starting in April and running until the end of November. The best hunting is May through September, although we hunted in October, and while temperatures pushed 100 degrees, we did not suffer – surprising but true.

CAMP
Camp is extremely comfortable, with wooden cabins and en suite bathrooms and showers. It sits in a grove of huge trees providing shade and coolness. Each cabin is tastefully furnished and is insect proof. There is a communal lapa (fire pit) for enjoying evening libations and sharing stories. There is ice and daily laundry as well. Meals are excellent, with a variety of cuisine including local game.

GETTING THERE
Various airlines travel to Mozambique. Most commonly our clients fly first to Johannesburg, and we suggest they then overnight there. We have a great outfit who helps clear your guns into that country, then picks you up in Joburg, takes you to their wonderful facilities, cooks you a big steak dinner, takes you back to the airport the next day, and helps you catch your flight to Beira, Mozambique. Most clients fly SAA, although there are others. You take a charter plane to camp. PH’s staff meets you in Beira.
