Newfoundland Moose Hunt #47

ABout this Adventure

Due to the rising cost of moose hunts in places such as Alaska and the Yukon, more affordable hunts in places such as Newfoundland have become more popular. Although we here at Hunt Nation work with several quality moose outfitters in that Province, availability seems to get tighter every year, and many clients just don’t have the flexibility to book 1-2 years or more in advance. So our Canadian agent, Don Sangster, set out to find us another high-quality, fly-in moose operation on “The Rock”, and he found just that.

After getting a couple of recommendations from a friend of his that co-hosts a very popular hunting show in Canada, Don quickly identified this operation on Newfoundland’s Northern Peninsula (north of Gros Morne National Park) as being exactly what we were looking for. His subsequent research and conversations with other hunters that have been there only reinforced this. We are very pleased to have them on board with us now.

This outfitter offers fly-in hunts from either one of two main lodges (each located on a lake or “pond”), or trophy hunts from one of their various spike camps (some also located beside ponds). The lodge will have 4-6 hunters per week, and the outfitter will use one of the lodges for the first 3 weeks of the season, and then switch over to the other lodge for the last 3 weeks of the 6-week season, so as not to overhunt an area. Their 4 spike camps (2 are fixed/cabin camps and 2 are mobile tent camps) generally have just 1 hunter and 1 guide per week, but they can also accommodate 2 hunters that wish to hunt together. All of these locations are remote, and boast untouched nature at its finest, with wooded areas, barrens, mountains and bogs, with very little hunting pressure. They each offer fantastic hunting for moose, and also some black bears, and each is a short flight by float plane or helicopter from Hawkes Bay, NL. All camps offer generated electricity, heat and awesome home-cooked meals and desserts.

While speaking with this outfitter’s references, two qualities that were mentioned repeatedly were “honest” and “hard-working”, and that’s exactly what you like to hear. But this outfitter and their guides are also knowledgeable, fun and friendly. And they truly care about how their clients are enjoying not just the hunt itself, but the overall experience. Whether you are looking to do your first moose hunt, or you’re a seasoned moose hunter, you just can’t go wrong here.

“It was like going with a bunch of guys I’ve hunted with my entire life!”. – A previous hunter.
But how’s the moose hunting? Well, since this outfitter took over this hunting area in 2019, they can boast an annual success rate of approx. 80%-85%, with an opportunity rate of 90+%. It just doesn’t get much better than that! It’s worth noting that while they have ATVs and Argos in camp, they are utilized only for game retrieval, so being able to get around on foot on rough, uneven and hilly ground (loaded with ground-hugging brush), and possibly in/out of a small boat, is essential. Simply put, the more mobile you are, the better your chance of success, especially for bigger bulls.

In terms of trophy quality, most bulls harvested will be between 35”-50”, but they have taken them as big as 52” (their spike camp trophy hunts generally offer the best chance at a bigger-than-average bull).
Hunts are 6 days (Monday to Saturday) and you are expected to arrive in Deer Lake on the Saturday before the hunt begins and depart on the Monday following the hunt. There is no fishing available on these hunts.

While there are cheaper hunts out there, please realize that quality animals in this Province consistently come from areas that are largely unreachable by residents. Moose need time to develop trophy racks, and this means sticking to fly-in operations. Then you also want an outfitter who has solid camps and guides. This gives you your best chance at a quality animal.

Their main lodge has generator/solar electricity, heat, indoor plumbing with hot and cold running water, and satellite internet. Spike camps are much more rustic, but do offer generator power and heat. All bedrooms are double occupancy.

Flights are available from various points in the USA, with a connection in Halifax, Montreal or Toronto. You will be met the next day at your hotel and driven to Hawkes Bay for your flight to camp. The same service will be provided on your return. All hotel stays are at your expense. PLEASE NOTE THAT HELICOPTERS AND FLOAT PLANES HAVE A 50 LBS. PER PERSON LUGGAGE LIMIT (NOT INCLUDING YOUR FIREARM).
If driving, make your way to North Sydney, Nova Scotia and board a ferry for the 7-hour journey to Port aux Basques, Newfoundland. Port aux Basques to Hawkes Bay is a 5-hour drive.

GETTING YOUR WEAPON INTO CANADA
You are allowed to bring your personal firearm with you. This includes your rifles, shotguns or muzzleloaders (NO HANDGUNS, SUPPRESSORS OR AR-15-TYPE RIFLES!). For your firearms, a simple one-page form is required to be filled out to obtain a temporary Canadian firearms permit. This form can be down-loaded or mailed to you well in advance from The Royal Canadian Mounted Police at https://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/wam/media/2347/original/d369a605ac3363b569af5ea5dc40c88d.pdf. Complete the NON-RESIDENT FIREARM DECLARATION FORM RCMP 5589 (and continuation Form 5590 if extra pages are needed). Completing this in advance should reduce your time clearing customs.

DO NOT SIGN IT UNTIL YOU APPEAR IN FRONT OF CUSTOMS, but fill it out. A confirmed declaration costs a flat fee of $25, regardless of the number of firearms listed on it. It is only valid for the person who signs it and for those firearms listed on the declaration. It is a simple form to fill out. IF YOU HAVE A DUI OR A CRIMINAL RECORD, CALL US! YOU MAY BE DENIED ADMITTANCE. NO FORMS ARE REQUIRED TO BRING YOUR HUNTING BOW INTO CANADA!
