Brown Bear, Red Stag, Fallow Bucks, Carpathian Chamois and Roe Deer – Romania #329

ABout this Adventure

Romania is a legendary destination, rich in history, folklore, and culture. Today, this eastern European country offers one of the best options for quality trophies and pricing without sacrificing one for the other. Here, hunters can pursue the Carpathian subspecies of chamois and red stag, the largest variety of each species found in Europe, or they can hunt plentiful roe bucks that litter the countryside during the summer rut. In October, the sound of croaking bellows and smashing antlers among fallow bucks is an experience a hunter will never forget. A choice of hunting areas is offered for most species, from budget friendly options to prime areas for the biggest trophies. Hunt Nation’s outfitter in Romania has been working in this country for many years. He not only has a legal background, but also a history working closely with the government and the forestry department. He has country-wide access to numerous deer associations, concessions, guides and territories, and if/when bear hunting does reopen to foreign hunters, he is among the best you could hire.

Carpathian Red Stag
The red stag from Romania is regarded as the largest-bodied red deer found in Europe, and the fourth largest deer species behind moose, elk and sambar. Plentiful, and found throughout the country from the mountains into the agricultural areas alike, they are one of this outfitter’s specialties. Best hunted during the roar from mid-September through early October, there are opportunities outside this period, depending on area. Most hunters understand that wild red stags will never attain the sizes of those that are genetically altered behind high-fences, however very impressive stags can be found in the wild, in genuine free range environments. Depending on the areas, stags average around 8 kilos in weight (antlers with upper skull attached), particularly for the “any size” options. Not surprisingly, areas that charge by size often produce the largest trophies with 11 kg, 12 kg and even larger heads taken each season, all with steep price tags. It is best to communicate your expectations with us when planning your hunt, that way, we can put you in the best areas to meet your needs, budget, trophy expectation, or physical abilities.
For red deer, we hunt the areas of Harghita, Covasna, Brasov, Sibiu and Valcea. The area hunted will determine with airport is best.

Fallow Deer
Romania has some of best fallow deer hunting on the planet, particularly in the far western portion of the country near the Hungarian border. These areas, famously known as the Socodor Plains, quite literally concentrate hundreds, if not thousands of rutting bucks as they migrate from the surrounding areas for the annual October rut. And the month of October is the only time we recommend hunting here. Hunt Nation’s Derek Amadio was here in October of 2021. Seeing and hearing bucks croaking, with antlers smashing, in seemingly every direction, is simply an incredible hunting experience, and trophy quality is quite good with most hunter taking old deer around 3.5kg, with about 10% of bucks taken each fall being exceptional fallow trophies weighing more than 4kg. Pricing in these areas is based on size, with quality trophies remaining affordable, especially when compared to neighboring countries. A second area for fallow deer in the south of Romania offers hunters the option to hunt “any size” bucks for one flat rate. See pricing below.

Carpathian Chamois
The chamois are one of the most affordable species for any of the world’s mountain hunts, and the Carpathian chamois in Romania are the largest of the various subspecies. Exceptional heads are produced in most of the hunting areas every season with both mature male and females considered trophy animals.

Chamois are hunted from September into December. Generally speaking, chamois have a very beautiful brown coloration with a thin summer coat in September. This time of year it is common to find these animals in timbered slopes or at high elevations. By October, the coat thickens and darkens to a prominently black color. The favored hunting period is from the 10th of October through the 10th of November during the rut, however chamois can be hunted into December, and often at lower altitudes, weather depending. You must be in good physical condition to hunt chamois, but the demands vary by time of year and by area. Three hunting days is generally enough time to get a good trophy. Hunt Nation’s Derek Amadio took a gold medal trophy in a single day here, however this isn’t always normal. Shooting distances rarely exceed 350 meters, or nearly 400 yards, as these are quite small bodied animals, and shooting angles are often steep.

Roe Bucks
Abundant, inexpensive, and a worthwhile trophy, these small trophies are Europe’s most plentiful deer species, and offer a great way to extend hunting opportunities into the summer months as the prime period to hunt them is from May through August. They are among the most affordable of any big game species, with the opportunity to hunt numerous bucks in just a few days’ time. Each deer association manages their areas differently. Some flat-rate areas are available, but most hunting clubs (all wild free range areas) charge pricing based on the weight of the antlers with the superior (upper) jaw attached, and trophies weighing from 300 grams to more than 600 grams are common throughout the country. Several hunt areas area offered to give unique options based on pricing, trophy quality, hunting environment and opportunity. Many of these hunts are ideal for those who may be mobility impaired, who simply cannot walk like they once could, as plenty of opportunities to hunt over agricultural fields exist for those willing to hunt by vehicle.

Brown Bear – NEW!
After years of closures, the Romanian government began issuing exportable permits for brown bear in 2024 and again in 2025 to help deal with the over population of animals. Pricing is exceptional and among the lowest to be found for any of the world’s brown bear subspecies. Bears scoring up to 400 CIC points eligible for export. A 5% margin of error is allowed, or up to a maximum size of 420 CIC points. Any bear taken scoring over this amount will not be eligible for export, however this method is highly subjective with a large portion of the score considered “beauty points” that can be intentionally downgraded to keep larger bodied bears within export limits. Bear scoring over 350 CIC points are considered Gold Medal by CIC standards. All Hunt Nation clients who booked this hunt in 2024 were successful, and all reported an excellent experience. This hunt will take place on private land areas in the regions of Harghita, Covasna, Brasov and Sibiu, with the closest airports being Otopeni and Sibiu. Expect to hunt by high seat over feeding areas and/or by stalking 1×1 with your guide. The number of bear in the areas are so high that the outfitters feels only two hunting days are necessary with additional hunting days and/or other species optional. Archery hunting is illegal in Romania, however rifle hunters have the option of renting or importing their own.
