B.C. – A Sleeper for Big Deer – #240

B.C. – A Sleeper for Big Deer – #240

Over the last few years, die hard whitetailers, have slowly been becoming aware that giant whitetails are coming regularly from a Canadian Province that has never really been considered as whitetail country/  And we are talking very big deer- deer in the 160 to 200 class, and larger. That Province is British Columbia. Although much of the province is not suitable habitat, those areas with good habitat are kicking out some true giants! These are massive racked deer, often non-typical, with plenty of age on them. We think right now is the time to jump on these hunts, as we suspect that these older giants will disappear over time, unless carefully managed.

This experienced outfitter is in northern British Columbia, and has spent most of his life in the hunting business. His hunts are done from tree stands and ground blinds, and some 4WD observing and searching. We think success on these hunts, if you hang in for the giants over say 150 class, and pass those 130’s and 140’s, will probably be in the 50% range; although weather is a factor. That is 50% but it is because clients hwo go here will pass on 140 and 150 class and even some 160 class, while hanging tough for a giant.. This is not a hunt for someone who insists on taking a deer home!!
But these deer offer a chance at a deer the likes of which most of us have never seen! Stands are strategically positioned in common feeding areas and generally have game moving. One can expect to have elk, caribou, whitetails, mule deer or even moose come by the stands. You might even see them right in the main camp area!

Main camp is several nice log buildings, and the out camps are either log cabins or good wall tents. All are kept clean and comfortable. The stands are comfortable and will accommodate either left or right hand shooters.

The first time they ever outfitted for these deer was 2009, so you can tell that these deer have barely been touched. Now is the time to go while those older age class deer are around and vulnerable!
Here is a comment from a 2009 client who took a 161” deer:
The outfitter refers to his whitetails as “mountain” whitetails. This is because the hunt is in the east slopes of the Rocky Mountains of northern British Columbia. In fact, I believe he is correct. The deer on his outfit are the large body, huge mass animals found next door in Alberta, and east of there. The difference is that they are not prairie animals. The hunting area is huge and beautiful and full of game. There is no local hunting pressure. This was a high quality hunt with excellent success and a lot of fun. A well-run, professional outfit, with a hard working efficient staff. Folks there want you to be successful with the best possible trophy. The hunting area is vast, beautiful and rich with game.” Joseph V.
