Spanish, Beceite, Rhonda Ibex, Boc & More Hunt #271

Spanish, Beceite, Rhonda Ibex, Boc & More Hunt #271

This outfitter has been guiding in Spain on his own and for other outfits for a number of years, and now operates his own Hunting company. His area is located in the heart of the Gredos mountain range.  Hunt Nation has worked with him since 2013 and all our clients have been successful and happy to date. Does an excellent job and is easy to work with as well.

The mountains there are a unique destination in terms of location, environment, fauna, staff and facilities. This is located in the heart of the Spanish Ibex area and it has a high density and high quality of trophies. The area has close to 5000 feet of variation in terms of elevations from the highest peaks to the lowest areas. This means a variety of habitats: deciduous forest, oaks, broom sedge and heathland, (bracken & fern), plus alpine meadows. This variety of habitat keeps animals moving from one place to another, depending on the season.

One of the main characteristics of the “Gargantas de Gredos” is that the animals are wild and completely free-ranging . The species that can be hunted there are the various Spanish ibex, red deer, fallow deer and wildboar. There are also other species to see such as the Golden Eagle, Griffon and Black Vulture, genets, otters, herons and fox.

The hunting

Stalking is the only technique used to hunt game here. There is horse and vehicle access to the lower lodges and to some of those at the middle levels, but the rest of the area must be covered on foot or by mountain horses, which are very gentle and accustomed to the mountain trails.
The hunting period runs from September 1 to the end of April with the rut taking place in November and December. Selective hunting is the cornerstone of their management policy. They are committed to making every effort to bring males to maturity, allowing them to develop to their full potential. It is not uncommon to take animals of 14 years of age!

They really stress taking care of their game and their customers. They have full time Game guards, service people and kitchen staff. They all have a number of years of experience working with the outfitter, and in the typical old European fashion, they continue the family traditions. Indeed many are descendants of those ancient Game guards (Real Coto de Gredos)- which was created by King Alfonso. A great professional team of 14 people with the aim of providing excellent service.

The property has 2 comfortable, but not luxurious houses in their lower areas, (all rooms have bathroom), and also 3 hunting lodges in the intermediate zones. They even have seven protective shelters in different places in case of bad weather.

WEAPONS: Getting guns into Spain is difficult.. We urge our clients to rent the outfitters guns. He has two for rent, 1 Blaser R93 7mm mag with Swarovski 2.5 to 12 x 56 and other Blaser R93 offr oad 270 Weatherby Magnum with Swarovski 2,5 to 15 x 56 with ballistic turret.

Beceite Ibex – IN TORTOSA AREA

Spain-271-Gredos-Ibex-pic-300x225

Description:
Beceite is said to be the largest and darkest type of Spanish Ibex, and it is said to have the largest horns. However a review of the SCI record book would suggest it may well be that the Gredos is actually carrying the largest horns. But conventional wisdom claims the Beceite is biggest. Typically, the horns are straighter than the Gredos ibex, with a spiral turn of less than 180 degrees. Horn thickness remains constant for the first half of the length, then decreases toward the tip, but is not as thin in the tip as in the Gredos race.

Distribution:
They inhabit steep lime stone mountains, up to 3,000 feet high, with pine forest and old farming fields with built up terraces. The Mountains of Beceite are located between Castellon, Teruel & Tarragona Provinces, in north-eastern Spain. The area is about 2 hours SW of Barcelona, close to the coast line. Tortosa- Beceite is an area of Spain having two provinces: Tarragona ( Tortosa ) and Castellon ( Beceite ). It is in this area that the hunting for Beceite specie takes place.
Season: October 15th – May 31st.

One of the main characteristics of Gargantas de Gredos is that the animals are wild and completely free-ranging . The species that can be hunted here are the spanish ibex, red deer, fallow deer and wildboar. Th ere are also other species that give Gargantas de Gredos its uniqueness such as the Golden Eagle, Griff on and Black Vulture, genets, otters, herons, foxes, among others.

Gredos Ibex – In Risco Gordo ( Las Batuecas)

Ibex-2-2014-300x225
Description:
Conventional wisdom claims that the Gredos ibex is the second largest ibex. Our review of the SCI record book seems to suggest that Gredos may average larger then Beceite! Gredos has large horns that typically are lyre-shaped with a pronounced curve and a spiral turn of more than 180 degrees. Horn thickness decreases progressively from the base to the very thin tip. Many feel the Gredos horns are the more handsome horns.

GREDOS IBEX
Distribution:  Gredos live in very impressive granite mountains, with very little forest. Elevations can go up to 7,000 feet high. This is in the mountain range of Gredos, roughly 2 hours SW of Madrid. In the Central Mountains of Spain, there are three Mountain ranges: Sierra of Francia, Sierra of Gredos and Sierra of Madrid. All three areas have Gredos. Breaking this down a bit further, Risco Gordo ( Las Batuecas) is an area of Sierra de Francia, and it has excellent Gredos. Next is the Province ( Caceres )Gargantas de Gredos. It is an area of Sierra of Gredos, and also has very good Gredos. The third area is in the Sierra of Madrid, and hunting is often in the National Park of Guadarrama Province ( Madrid).
Season: September 15th – March 31st.

RONDA IBEX

ibex-1-2014-300x225

The Ronda is smallest type of Spanish ibex but with impressive horns for his size. Compared to the other two major types, he has the smallest horns. Overall color is a light brown. The horns resemble those of an Alpine ibex, typically growing upward in a V-shape, then backward with a spiral turn of only 90 degrees. Horn thickness is constant for half the length, then decreases gradually to the broomed tips. Ronda hunting is the most physical of the Ibex hunts.
Distribution: They live in extremely steep, lime stone mountains, up to 4,000 feet high. Hunts are in the Ronda mountain range of the Malaga province. It takes about 4 ½ hours to drive from Madrid. The Spanish Ronda Ibex hunting takes place in the Sierra of Ronda Province ( Malaga and Cadiz )
Season: October 15th – March 31st
PLEASE NOTE THAT WOUNDED AND UNRECOVERED ANIMALS ARE CHARGED FULLY.

Spain is known for its beauty, its long term hunting traditions and its plentiful and carefully managed IBex herds. Hunting is generally done from October into March, and sometimes into May for certain species, excluding the Gredos. Lodging tends to be comfortable, with great food and wine, and usually very scenic as well. Wounded game generally must be paid for at full price.

PROGRAM # 1: : TWO SPECIE Ibex hunt for the Beceite and Gredos species . Those are usually considered the most representative of the various ibex found in Spain. These will be representative size animals, not gold or silver medal. But the price is just XXXXXXx- pending. Please ask. Price is all inclusive of guiding, meals and lodging; except for two hunting license 200 € ( about $240) ( Areas- Extremadura and Comunidad of Valencia ). Tips and personal expenses are extra. Four days actual hunting is minimum. We suggest you allow at least 7 days to include flights. Here is a sample itinerary:

A ROUGH CONVERSION OF CIC SCORE TO SCI SCORE  –This is very approximate.

In Europe they use CIC. It includes weight of antler and also a “beauty” factor. So it is not a simple measurement. But here are the ROUGH equivalences in SCI (inches).

180 points CIC  (60 cm  approx.)  – 63 points SCI  (23 inch approx.)

205 points CIC  (70 cm approx.) – 72 points SCI Bronze medal. (27,5 inch approx.)

215 points CIC  ( 77 cm approx.) 75 2/8 points SCI Silver medal. ( 30 inch approx.)

225 points CIC  ( 82 cm approx.) 79 points SCI Gold medal. ( 33 inch approx.)

As you can see there are just a few inches between the medal classes. The Representative animals for the most part are going to be an animal that is just a few inches short of scoring Bronze.

RIFLES: We urge our client to rent rifles from the outfitter, not bring your own. Otherwise you must go to the nearest Spanish consulate to obtain a permit. • After preparing a trophy for shipping and once everything is ready, they send to their International Transport Agent, all required documentation (Documentation or seal which identifies the trophy, veterinary certificate, etc.) They have spent many years working with this company and to date there has been no incidents or problems. Transit time is around 3-4 days from there to the port of entry airport in the US. Once the goods arrive, simply arrange customs clearance through your agent to get your trophies. Estimated costs are:
The cost of taxidermy with the tanning of the skin 180 € approx. per Ibex. The cost of shipment with authorization export and Certificate Veterinary and shipment cost with approx. 15 Kg ( two Ibex trophies weigh 12-15 Kg ) 550 € approx. depending on weight and US destination.

DIRECTLY FROM THE OUTFITTER : HIS USUAL ITINERARY FOR A ONE IBEX HUNT:
Day 1; I will be picking the hunter up at the airport (Madrid-Barajas airport is the most convenient for all species, the longest distance of this point is Beceite with 5 hours by car). We will drive to the hunting area, if we are in time, started the hunt until nightfall, will be coming back to the lodge.
Day 2; have breakfast, and go out hunting all the day, have lunch in the mountains with typical Spanish meal and a good red wine. We will hunt again until dusk, usually we take the trophy between the first and second day.
Day 3/4; if the hunt is finished, return to Madrid and pick the hunters to a hotel. Thinking that the hunter comes with companion non-hunter or in their own interest in learning about our culture, cuisine, customs…we can arrange a visit to Madrid or another tourist cities of Spain, like Toledo that it is one hour drive from Madrid.
If we are hunting for more than one specie and they are found in another area, we will also have to count with at least half a day for travelling, continue with more or less the same schedule.
In the area of Gredos, we have horses available to the client, seven professional guides and accommodation of first level class with personal service. In the other area, In Batuecas, two guides and accommodation in rural houses inside the hunting area. In the other areas, have guides specialized in the different species.
Of course, I always accompany the hunter during all the hunting, as agreed with you.
I have 21 years of experience guiding groups hunting in Spain, Asia and Europe, also participated as a partner in the founding of two companies for Spanish hunting. Being honest and serious about guiding is the way I work, having hundreds of hunter satisfied with their trophies hanging in their hunting lodges..
