The outfitter bought the rights to the guide territory bordering his, so now the outfitter controls most of the area’s permits in this limited draw zone. Apply for this hunt area via the special license by Jan. 31 or buy a preference point If you apply for the license and do not draw you will acquire a point and be in great shape to draw this hunt the next year at the special price. He hunts Areas 61 an 62 in Wyoming, in the so called Greybull River area.

WY-112-Packtrip-02-300x225 For anyone a bit intimidated by horses, the horseback pack trip into the wilderness camp is only a three hour ride. It is an area of great scenic beauty, with a variety of wildlife. The outfitter uses his horses for summer pack trips so by hunting season they are gentle, well-seasoned and broke to pack and saddle. Because his area is a limited draw area, bulls tend to get more age and impressive racks. Not many residents apply for this unit, so competition is light. Since the outfitter acquired the adjacent guide territory, he gets most of the tags for the unit and can shift camps to hot areas. Horses are used daily. In the morning expect to ride one to two hours to get into the best areas, which vary slightly from hunt to hunt. It works to your advantage to be in above average physical condition when it is time to walk. Your success is often dependent on how quickly you can get to the top of the hill to cut off a bull

Some suggestions. Start a conditioning program so you can get the most out of this hunt.  Do some riding too. Practice shooting long range. This is big open country and many bulls are killed out at 300 to 400 yard ranges. You should be able to hit a gallon milk jug at 300 yards at least eight out of 10 times.

This country has lots of mountain meadows, and is prime elk country. Terrain is modest mountains with many open parks. This is the classic wilderness elk country most of us dreamed about as aspiring hunters.

Not everyone kills record-book bulls, but 300-inch and above trophies are more the rule than the exception.

The outfitter’s elk season opens around October 1. Bulls are actively bugling for the next three weeks or so. The accommodations are comfortable tent camps, livestock is sturdy and dependable, food is satisfying and the guides are more than capable. If you tag out early, you can hike about a half-mile to the Greybull River and catch a bunch of native cutthroat trout. Nights you will sit around a campfire drinking cowboy coffee. You will probably hear bulls bugling as well. You may even be privileged to see an occasional grizzly bear, although they are not common in his area.

WY-112-ladder-elk-pic2-2012-300x187 The terrain is exemplified by many parks and meadows, which provide plenty of open spaces where shots can be on the long side. A set of shooting sticks are a valuable piece of equipment. Bipods do not fit in rifle scabbards. We can supply you with an equipment list and suggestions.

If you attempt to draw this tag at the regular price level of $591 with no points, your chances of drawing are non-existent. At the special level license, odds vary depending on the units the outfitter hunts, from a low of about 8% to upwards of 40 to 50%. Again, it depends on the unit applied for. If you have two to three points, and apply at the special level and you can expect to draw.

You may need to apply for several years or buy the $50 preference point each year after July 1 and before Sept 30 when it closes. If you do not draw in Wyoming, there are other places where we can find you a hunt.  You will know by late February if you drew the Wyoming tag, so there’s plenty of time left to book a hunt.
