The Kasilof River in Alaska offers a diverse and popular fishing experience, known for its abundance of salmon, particularly king and sockeye, and also for steelhead and silver salmon, with a drift-only fishing style and generally less crowded conditions than the nearby Kenai River.
Here’s a more detailed look at Kasilof River fishing:
Salmon Runs:
• King Salmon: The Kasilof River has two distinct king salmon runs: an early run that peaks in mid-May and June, and a late run that arrives in early July and peaks in the third and fourth weeks of the month. The late run, known as “Tusties,” can produce very large fish, with some exceeding 50 pounds. Anglers can retain king salmon, unlike the Kenai River, where catch-and-release is often enforced.
• Sockeye Salmon: The Kasilof has a good sockeye run, though not as large as the Kenai’s, with the peak return typically occurring in late June and early July. The section from Tustamena Lake to the Sterling Highway bridge, known as the “Upper Kasilof,” is particularly productive for sockeye.
• Silver Salmon: The Kasilof also sees a good return of silver salmon, with the peak run occurring in late August and September. The second run of silvers, which occurs in September and October, is known for larger fish and more action.
• Steelhead: The Kasilof River is a good place to target steelhead, with the best times to fish being in April/May and October/November. The Kasilof River is catch-and-release only for rainbow/steelhead trout, and fish may not be removed from the water prior to release.
• Rainbow Trout and Dolly Varden: These species are available year-round and can be good targets, especially after the king salmon season closes.
Fishing Style and Regulations:
Drift-Only: The Kasilof River is a drift-only river, meaning fishing is only allowed from a drift boat without the aid of a motor. So river noise is minimal, enhancing the enjoyment.
