Greenland remains one of the world’s most pristine and unique destinations for adventurous travelers who truly enjoy the experience as much as they enjoy the hunt itself. Greenland is the world’s largest island, surrounded by ocean and ice, with plentiful wildlife and hosted by a generational outfitting family that has made a living from sustainable hunting. Best of all, they offer affordable opportunities for muskox and caribou in some of the most game rich areas of the island, reached by jet boat or helicopter during the summer and early fall months and by ATV during the later fall and spring months. With the majority of their hunts taking place on two private and remote concessions no other outfitter can hunt on, success rates are simply unbeatable, with 100% of muskox hunters filling this tags since 1996. Perhaps more importantly, this hunt overwhelmingly produces some of the most favorable post-hunt client feedback of any trip we offer, with exceptional reviews of the outfitter and their staff and their commitment to client satisfaction!
Travel
Hunters must get themselves to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland (airport code SFJ). In the past, flying through Copenhagen on Air Greenland (airgreenland.com) was the best option. Today, a new route on United Airlines from Newark, NJ to Nuuk, Greenland followed by a connecting flight to Kangerlussuaq is the preferred route.
Once in Kangerlussuaq, Spring hunters in March and April will generally transfer directly to camp the same day by ATV as the ground is frozen. Hunters arriving during the summer and fall months from July through September will typically arrive on day prior to being picked up and should expect to spend the first night at one of the local hotels at their own expense. The following day, transfer to camp via jet boat or by helicopter (depending on weather and water levels) and remain in camp for the duration of the trip. At the end of the hunt, a transfer back to Kangerlussuaq will be early enough to catch a same-day commercial flight back to Copenhagen.
Hotel options in Kangerlussuaq include the following:
• Polar Lodge
• Old Camp
• Hotel Kangerlussuaq (recommended)
• Albatros Arctic Circle
• Søndre Strømfjord
The Hunt
This outfitter operates in one of the highest game densities of Greenland. Additionally, this outfitter is one of the very few in Greenland who control their own exclusive hunting concessions no other outfitters can hunt. This has enabled them to selectively manage their game, taking only old, mature muskox and enjoying a 100% past success rate on muskox bulls since 1996. They intentionally only harvest roughly 70% of their annual quota to maintain sustainable hunting on a long-term basis and to provide additional tags on-hand for anyone who decides to take additional trophies while in camp.
Hunt durations are relatively short due to the high success of the area with spring hunts 2.5 hunting days (4-day schedule), late summer and early fall hunts averaging 3.5 hunting days with a 5-day schedule, and late season October hunts normally 4.5 hunting days with a 6-day schedule. Additional time is not possible and simply not needed in most cases. Four to six hunters are normally booked at a time, and divided into separate groups. When one hunter kills an animal, it is common for the second hunter to continue hunting with the second guide without waiting on the first animal to be packed out of the field. This maximizes the time in camp and the opportunities for anyone who would like to take additional animals.
Summer/Fall Hunts
The cost of camp transfers are included in the hunt cost regardless of the method of transportation, so if a helicopter is necessary, that cost will not be charged as an additional expense.
It is quite common for muskox to be hunted in sight of the cabin, however hunters should expect to walk for muskox and hike for caribou, with the aid of inflatable boats to help navigate lakes in the surrounding areas. Shooting distances average 50 to 300 yards for rifle hunters and 20 to 40 yards for archery hunters. It is very common to shoot a muskox on the first day of the hunt, using the second and third days for additional game. Additional game may include native caribou, a second muskox, or small game during the spring hunts, including arctic fox, arctic hare or ptarmigan.
Many hunters do not realize that muskox carry long hair, beautiful hair year-round, even during the summer months when temperatures are in the fifties, however they will develop a winter wool during September and carry that through the spring. Young, immature bulls as well as female muskox are not taken as only old, mature bulls are harvested.
Native caribou in this region of Greenland (Central Canadian Barren Ground per GSCO and SCI classifications) are fully grown by early August, and hard horned by late August or early September. Success rates on caribou is very good with nearly every past Hunt Nation client taking one who has wanted one, but more physical effort may be required depending on season and distance from camp the hunters and guide must walk. That said, some quality bulls are taken by lucky hunters close to camp, particularly later in the season when the bulls are moving during the rut. Additional muskox may also be taken for an additional trophy fee as long as the quota is available, which is almost always is.
October Option
During the month of October when the caribou are rutting and have moved away from their summering areas, the outfitter can hunt these animals, as well as muskox, directly from the town of Kangerlussuaq by ATV and/or by boat as the animals are found around the fjord. These hunts will utilize a hotel in town for meals and accommodations (nightly dinners are not included), and a second animal (muskox or caribou) may be taken for a $3,500 trophy fee. These late-season hunts may have a slightly longer hunt schedule. Call our office for specific openings.
Rifle Rental
For most hunters, we recommend renting one of the outfitter’s premium rifles. The cost is $210 for the hunt, and this charge may actually be less than what may airlines are charging to check weapons as luggage. The rifles to choose from include the following:
– Sako s20 in .300 Win with Swarovski optic
– Sako s20 in .300 Win with Swarovski DS (Digital range finding riflescope)
– Schulz & Larsen in .300 Win with Kahles Optic
– Sauer Rifle in 6.5×55 with Kahles Optic (caribou only)
Accommodations
For Spring, Summer and early Fall hunts, a remote, heated cabin, with four bedrooms and electricity, will serve as camp for the duration of spring and fall muskox hunts. Each room has two single beds for single or double occupancy, and the camp can comfortably host up to six hunters at a time. A satellite phone as well as Starlink internet is available in camp. As a reminder, October hunters will stay at one of the hotels in Kangerlussuaq for late fall hunt options.
March and April Muskox via ATV/UTV. This hunt can be quite cold, but typically not extreme as commonly found in the Canadian arctic. Daytime temperatures average in the teens in March, but warmer or colder weather is always possible. Hunting is primarily conducted via ATV, leaving camp in the mornings with a minimum of two guides per group, for safety reasons. Hunting excellent, but hunters do need to arrive with the appropriate cold weather gear to adequately enjoy this experience while being exposed to the elements while away from camp. The aurora borealis is prevalent during the winter and spring months, and those who are willing to come this time of year will enjoy some of the lowest muskox pricing you can find anywhere in North America for a quality hunt. Caribou are not available during this period as the older, mature bulls have already cast their antlers. Small game are available this time of year, and hunters may take up to five small game animals in combination in total, with arctic fox @ $300 each and arctic hare and/or ptarmigan @ $100 plus the cost of the small game hunting license.
Trophy Shipping
Until now, muskox and reindeer trophies from Greenland had to ship through Denmark, which was a time consuming and very expensive process. Beginning in 2024, trophies are now shipped in an outfitter-exclusive freezing container from Greenland to New York. This will not only save a considerable amount of time, but the overall cost will be substantially less. Shipping costs from Greenland to New York are included for the first trophy, and charged @ $500 per each additional trophy (muskox or caribou) and payable directly to the outfitter. Once the trophies arrive in New York, an import broker and a USDA-approved taxidermy will work with clients for further trophy processing, however these third-party services will be billed to the clients directly at additional charges.
