For many hunters, black bear hunting brings to mind long afternoons sitting over a bait station waiting for a mature bruin to appear. Hunting bears over bait can be extremely effective, but it isn’t the only way to pursue black bears.

If you’d rather spend your hunt glassing mountainsides, cruising remote shorelines, hiking logging roads or actively stalking feeding bears, a spot-and-stalk black bear hunt may be exactly what you’re looking for.

Alberta #335 – Limited Fall Spot & Stalk Black Bear Hunts

Northern Alberta has long been one of our favorite destinations for hunters looking for excellent bear numbers and opportunities for mature black bears.

Beginning in 2027, Alberta #335 will offer a very limited number of 7-day, 1×1 fall spot-and-stalk black bear hunts. The outfitter will hunt an area he has personally hunted for more than 15 years.

This is particularly interesting for hunters who like the quality of Alberta black bear hunting but would rather actively locate and stalk bears than spend their hunting hours sitting over bait.

Hunt Nation knows this outfitter firsthand. Hunt Nation President Ed Manasse and VP Butch Manasse hunted his operation in 2023. Eight hunters in camp took 13 bears, demonstrating the bear numbers available in his territory.

Best for: Hunters wanting a limited 1×1 Canadian fall bear hunt with an active hunting style.

Alberta #286 – Spot & Stalk Bears in a 2,000-Square-Mile Territory

Another excellent Alberta option is Alberta #286.

This family-owned outfitter controls the bear hunting rights to approximately 2,000 square miles of Crown land in Alberta. Although most of the operation’s spring black bear hunting is conducted over bait, the outfitter also offers a very limited number of spot-and-stalk hunts.

The sheer size of the territory is one of the attractions. There is an enormous amount of country available to locate bears, and the outfitter reports that the spot-and-stalk hunts can potentially produce even more bear encounters than their traditional bait hunts.

Bears in the area commonly reach 7 feet or better, and color-phase bears are also present.

Best for: Hunters wanting a limited spring Alberta spot-and-stalk hunt in a massive exclusive territory.

British Columbia #210 – Vancouver Island Spot & Stalk Black Bears

If you want a true spot-and-stalk black bear hunt, Vancouver Island belongs near the top of the list.

The island supports an exceptional black bear population, and Hunt Nation’s British Columbia #210 outfitter controls approximately 1,200 square miles of territory, with more than half of the hunting area located behind locked gates and inaccessible to the general hunting public.

The hunting method is straightforward and exciting.

Hunters use ATVs and 4WD vehicles to travel the old logging-road network, then walk roads and glass clear-cuts looking for feeding bears. Once you locate the right mature boar, the stalk begins.

Seeing multiple bears in a day is possible, and the outfitter’s area has produced some tremendous animals. The current Hunt Nation listing reports many 7-foot bears, with approximately 6½ feet being average.

Spring hunts generally run from approximately mid-April through mid-June, and both rifle and bow hunters can participate.

Best for: Hunters looking for a classic Canadian spot-and-stalk bear hunt with excellent lodging and trophy potential.

Idaho #103 – Hounds in the Morning, Spot & Stalk in the Afternoon

This may be one of the most unusual black bear hunts on our list.

While Idaho #103 offers traditional baited bear hunting during the spring, its fall black bear hunt combines two completely different active hunting methods.

In the mornings, hunters pursue bears with hounds. In the afternoons and evenings, the hunt changes to spot-and-stalk.

Hunters glass hillsides and canyons containing thousands of wild plum trees. Bears move into these areas during September to feed heavily on the fruit before winter, creating excellent opportunities to locate bears from a distance and plan a stalk.

And this isn’t just theory. Butch and Joan Manasse have personally hunted the fall spot-and-stalk program multiple times. According to Hunt Nation’s listing, Butch saw 12 bears during a five-day hunt, while Joan saw 26.

Color-phase bears are another major attraction. The outfitter reports approximately 60% color phase on this fall hunt, ranging from chocolate and cinnamon to blonde and red.

Best for: Hunters wanting maximum activity and a completely different black bear hunting experience.

Alaska #140 – Boat-Based Southeast Alaska Black Bear Hunting

Few hunting experiences compare with pursuing coastal black bears in Southeast Alaska.

Alaska #140 offers spot-and-stalk hunts in the bays and inlets surrounding Prince of Wales Island and the Misty Fjords wilderness area.

These hunts are primarily boat-based, with hunters living aboard the vessel while traveling through productive coastal bear habitat. Cabin-based accommodations can also be arranged.

The strategy is to use the boat to cover productive coastal areas and locate trophy bears before going ashore to make the stalk. Southeast Alaska’s spectacular scenery is an added bonus—and depending on the season and available time, fishing can potentially be incorporated into the adventure.

This is also an operation Hunt Nation knows personally. Butch and Joan have hunted this area, with Joan taking a 7’2″ black bear.

Alaska #156 – Luxury Yacht-Based Spot & Stalk Black Bear Hunts

Want to combine serious Alaska black bear hunting with luxury accommodations?

Alaska #156 takes the boat-based concept to another level.

Hunters stay aboard either a 70-foot or 100-foot yacht, complete with private accommodations and gourmet meals, while traveling through the spectacular coastal country of Southeast Alaska.

Spring black bear hunts are fair-chase spot-and-stalk beach hunts. Hunters spend their days cruising bays and fjords in 16-foot skiffs looking for trophy bears along the shoreline. Once the right bear is located, you go ashore and make your stalk.

Hunt Nation’s current listing reports that spring hunts have produced approximately 80% success over the previous five years, with opportunity normally reaching 100%.

Oregon #265 – Spring Spot & Stalk for Color-Phase Bears

Eastern Oregon offers an entirely different kind of spring bear hunt.

Instead of bait stations or hounds, this outfitter uses a tracked side-by-side to reach areas that can be extremely difficult for other hunters to access during the spring.

Once in position, hunters spend considerable time glassing open hillsides for bears emerging from hibernation and feeding on spring vegetation. When the right bear is spotted, it’s time to plan the stalk.

This can be excellent country for hunters who enjoy glassing. Shots can be relatively long because of the open terrain, so hunters should arrive comfortable with their rifle and prepared to shoot at distance.

Another major attraction is color-phase black bears. The outfitter reports seeing a lot of color-phase bears—possibly even more than traditional black-colored bears. No baiting or hounds are used on these hunts.

The season generally runs April 1 through May 31, with the best hunting typically occurring shortly after the snow disappears.

Best for: Western hunters who enjoy glassing, longer-range rifle hunting and the possibility of a beautiful color-phase bear.
