Chinese Water Deer and Muntjac Hunting: Planning an England Combination Trip

Chinese water deer and muntjac fit naturally into an England combination hunt, but choosing the right package takes more than comparing the advertised prices. You need to know how many hunting outings are included, which animals the price covers and what you will pay separately.

Chinese water deer hunting in England runs from November 1 through March 31 under the ordinary open season. Muntjac have no statutory close season, so the water deer season determines the window for a combination trip.

Hunt Nation offers a Norfolk manor package starting at $6,000 and a separate guided combination priced at ÂŁ4,048. They include different numbers of animals and different services. One combines hunting with accommodation, meals and airport transfers. The other separates those expenses from the hunting price.

Interested in combining both species? Contact Hunt Nation with your preferred dates, number of hunters and whether a nonhunting companion will join you. We can help you compare the arrangements that fit your trip.

Chinese Water Deer and Muntjac: What Is the Difference?

These are two distinct deer species, rather than different names for the same animal.

Chinese water deer have no antlers. Bucks carry prominent upper canine teeth, commonly called tusks. Their rounded ears and facial appearance make them distinctive.

Muntjac bucks carry short antlers as well as tusks. The absence of antlers on a water deer is therefore normal, rather than evidence that it is a female or an immature buck.

That difference matters when discussing trophy expectations. An antler-based description does not translate directly to a water deer trophy.

Before hunting, use the briefing to understand the species, sex and individual animal your stalker intends you to take. Do not assume that recognizing tusks is enough to make every identification or trophy decision.

Why Combine Chinese Water Deer and Muntjac?

The practical attraction is the opportunity to pursue both species during the same visit, using a shared base and guided hunting arrangements.

The combination also offers variety. An outing across open farmland can feel different from a careful approach along woodland or a wait in an elevated seat.

Hunt Nation’s Norfolk offering describes farmland, mature woodland, hedgerows and field margins. Its separate southern England operation uses a mixture of stalking, slow observation-based hunting and high seats.

A high seat is an elevated hunting position. It provides a different way to watch suitable ground when walking is not the preferred approach.

Combining species does not mean every outing will produce an opportunity at both. Weather, animal movements and the stalker’s decisions affect how the available hunting time is used.

Where Does Chinese Water Deer Hunting Take Place?

The two Hunt Nation offerings provide different settings for Chinese water deer hunting in England.

Norfolk farmland and woodland

The Norfolk Chinese water deer and muntjac combination is based at Gowthorpe Manor.

The estate includes approximately 1,000 free-range acres, with additional hunting ground available. Its combination of farmland, woodland and field edges supports traditional stalking outings.

The package is built around staying at the manor and hunting from that base. This suits someone who wants accommodation, food and hunting organized together.

Private-land hunting in southern England

The England guided deer combination describes exclusive private-land access and one guide per hunter.

Accommodation is separate, with daily transfers between the accommodation and hunting ground included.

This arrangement gives you a different budgeting structure. You can compare the hunting package first, then account for the accommodation standard and meal arrangements you prefer.

Do not assume that references to deer parks elsewhere on the same page describe the Chinese water deer and muntjac combination. That offering is presented as wild, free-range hunting.

When Is the Best Time for a Combination Hunt?

The ordinary Chinese water deer season in England is November 1 through March 31. Muntjac can be hunted year-round, subject to other applicable requirements and responsible management.

The British Deer Society’s season information supports this distinction. A year-round muntjac opportunity does not extend the ordinary water deer season into summer.

Species England season relevant to planning
Chinese water deer November 1 through March 31
Muntjac No statutory close season
Combined trip Plan within the Chinese water deer season

November through February

The southern England operation recommends November through February for its combination hunts, citing hide and trophy-condition considerations.

That is an outfitter recommendation for its offering, rather than a guarantee that one particular month will provide the best hunting.

If a shoulder mount or a particular trophy presentation matters to you, explain that before selecting dates.

Planning a March hunt

March remains within the ordinary water deer season, but legal availability and preferred trophy condition are different questions.

The southern England listing raises late-season considerations concerning muntjac antlers and water deer hair condition. Discuss the intended trophy and individual animals rather than assuming every March buck will be in the same condition.

How Does an English Deer Stalk Work?

A stalk is a controlled approach to deer, with the guide assessing the ground and potential opportunity as the outing develops.

The Norfolk sample itinerary begins with rifle zeroing and a hunting briefing. It then uses first-light outings and afternoon or evening stalks, depending on conditions.

For a visiting hunter, that briefing is useful time. Learn how the stalker wants you to move, when to stop and how the shooting position will be arranged.

Observation before movement

Walking continuously is not the objective.

Use binoculars to study the ground before moving into it. A pause at a field edge may reveal information that would be missed by stepping straight into the open.

As general field preparation, practice raising and using your binoculars quietly. Keep them accessible rather than buried under clothing or inside a pack.

Approaching through mixed cover

Hedgerows, woodland edges and changes in the ground affect the route.

Follow the stalker’s pace. Leave enough room to stop without bumping into the person ahead, and avoid making an unnecessary final movement when the guide pauses.

Quiet clothing matters here. A waterproof jacket is less useful for stalking if every movement produces distracting noise.

Waiting in a high seat

The southern England offering includes high seats among its possible methods.

A seated outing still requires preparation. You need suitable clothing for remaining still and a comfortable, safe way to manage your equipment.

If climbing into an elevated position is difficult for you, raise that before booking. Easy walking does not establish that every seat or approach will suit every hunter.

Taking a shot

Wait for a clearly identified animal, a safe background and a stable position.

Do not turn a brief opportunity into a rushed decision. A guide’s invitation to shoot does not remove your responsibility to decline a shot you cannot make reliably.

How Much Does Chinese Water Deer Hunting Cost?

Hunt Nation lists different combinations in United States dollars and British pounds. Keep those currencies separate when comparing packages.

Package Published price Included animals Hunting time
Norfolk manor combination $6,000 One Chinese water deer buck and two muntjac Four hunting days within five days and four nights
Norfolk expanded combination $8,000 Two Chinese water deer bucks and four muntjac Same stated package duration
Southern England guided combination ÂŁ4,048 One trophy-class Chinese water deer and one trophy-class muntjac Three hunting days

These are published package prices. The final reservation should identify the agreed rate, animals and services for your dates.

What the Norfolk package includes

The manor package lists accommodation, meals and house drinks, airport and local transportation, rifle hire, ammunition and required hunting licensing.

International flights, trophy preparation and export, and gratuities are excluded.

The five-day description should not be read as five full hunting days. The package expressly identifies four hunting days.

What the southern England package includes

The southern England combination includes the stated animals’ trophy fees, three hunting days, individual guiding, daily ground transfers and rifle rental.

Accommodation, meals, airport transfers and trophy-related services are additional. The listing describes standard accommodation starting at ÂŁ100 per night.

Its additional trophy-class animal fees are ÂŁ1,250 for a Chinese water deer and ÂŁ1,000 for a muntjac.

Compare the complete trip

The lower advertised amount is not automatically the lower complete cost.

Use the same categories for each option:

Budget category What to include
Hunting Package price and any additional animals
Accommodation Included nights or separately booked rooms
Meals Included food and separate dining expenses
Transportation Airport transfers and daily hunting transfers
Rifle arrangements Hire, ammunition and any additional services
Trophy care Preparation, taxidermy, export and delivery
Other expenses Flights, gratuities, companion activities and insurance

For the southern England combination, adding one additional trophy-class muntjac to the ÂŁ4,048 package produces a ÂŁ5,048 hunting subtotal. Accommodation, meals and other excluded expenses would still be additional.

That example helps explain the pricing structure. It is not a complete-trip quotation.

How Many Hunting Days Should You Allow?

The supplied combinations provide three or four hunting days.

Three days have been sufficient on past hunts described by the southern England operation, but past results do not guarantee that both species will be harvested during your visit.

The Norfolk sample itinerary spreads outings around an arrival briefing, morning hunts and later stalks. Its final hunting opportunity is a first-light outing before departure.

Keep that final outing available when considering any onward plans. A package’s calendar length, accommodation nights and hunting sessions are separate details.

Do You Need to Bring Your Own Rifle?

Both offerings include access to an outfitter rifle.

For many visiting hunters, that can simplify the equipment side of the trip. It does not mean that borrowing a rifle removes every applicable legal or eligibility requirement.

The Norfolk package expressly includes ammunition. The southern England listing identifies rifle rental, but ammunition is not expressly specified in its inclusion list.

Use the familiarization time properly

As general preparation, become comfortable with the rifle’s fit, controls and shooting position before hunting.

The Norfolk itinerary includes zeroing. Use that opportunity to establish confidence in the supplied equipment and discuss the support you will use in the field.

If you prefer your own firearm, arrange the applicable visitor and transport requirements before departure. Do not assume that buying a hunting package automatically authorizes importing a personal rifle.

Clothing, Optics and Physical Preparation

Hunt Nation’s Norfolk recommendations emphasize practical stalking equipment: waterproof clothing, warm layers, quiet trousers, sturdy waterproof boots and binoculars.

Its binocular recommendation is eight-power or ten-power. There is no need to arrive with equipment you cannot use comfortably simply because it offers more magnification.

Use the broader Hunt Nation gear list as a preparation resource, then tailor your packing to the booked hunt.

Dress for walking and waiting

You may warm up while walking and cool down during observation.

Use layers that let you adjust without a complete clothing change. Check whether your outerwear allows you to shoulder the rifle comfortably and whether gloves interfere with handling.

Test your waterproof boots before the trip. Comfort matters during a slow stalk just as much as during a longer walk.

Prepare for the actual movements

The southern England listing describes relatively easy walking and methods suitable for different physical abilities.

That is useful information, but your individual needs still matter. Tell the booking team if uneven ground, kneeling, prolonged standing or climbing a seat presents a difficulty.

As general preparation, walk regularly in your intended boots and practice safe supported shooting positions at a suitable range.

Can a Nonhunting Companion Join You?

The Norfolk offering includes observer options, including an option with sightseeing.

That can make a combination hunt relevant to a couple or friends with different interests. However, a sightseeing option is not a promise that every attraction or activity is available on every date.

Keep the companion’s plans separate from the hunter’s field schedule. The Norfolk sample itinerary allows observers to pursue activities while the hunter is out.

For the southern England option, accommodation is arranged separately, so the room and companion arrangements should be included in the individual quotation.

Trophy Quality, Preparation and Export

A package that includes a trophy animal does not necessarily guarantee a particular medal.

Ask what the package description means by “trophy-class” and how any scoring or assessment will be handled. An outfitter’s past results do not establish the score of the animal you will take.

Choose the intended presentation before hunting

Decide whether you want a skull preparation, shoulder mount or another presentation.

Tell the stalker before field preparation begins. That gives the team a clear understanding of what must be preserved for the intended work.

Keep export separate from the hunting price

Both offerings exclude relevant trophy preparation or shipping expenses.

The Norfolk listing describes a coordinated export service, with charges paid separately. The southern England operation can arrange taxidermy or shipping services at the client’s direction.

Obtain the scope of work, destination requirements and charges before authorizing services. Do not assume that an estimated delivery period is a guaranteed arrival date.

Common Mistakes When Planning the Combination

Treating both deer as antler trophies

Chinese water deer have no antlers. Understand the identification and trophy discussion before hunting.

Choosing dates for muntjac alone

Muntjac’s year-round status does not extend the ordinary Chinese water deer season.

Counting every calendar day as a hunting day

Read the actual outings and duration. Five days and four nights do not mean five full hunting days.

Assuming “all-inclusive” covers export

The manor package excludes flights, trophy preparation and export, and gratuities.

Buying noisy clothing

Test your clothing while walking, bending and shouldering a rifle. Quiet movement is part of practical preparation.

Confusing wild hunts with deer-park offerings

A page may advertise several different experiences. Match the description and inclusions to the combination you are booking.
