Big Mulies, Whitetails Alberta #21

ABout this Adventure

A big mule deer buck is one of the top hunting trophies in North America today, and Alberta is unquestionably one of the best places on the planet to tag a monster buck. This outfitter is part of one of the best-known outfitting families in western/northern Canada. He has guided for and with this family for many years in British Columbia and the Northwest Territories, but also outfits on his own. He has several ranches to hunt in Alberta (he also offers hunts for big mulies in Sonora, Mexico). He takes very few hunters per season, so you must usually book early or wait a year or more.

Historically, the mule deer he has taken with clients have been awesome. He and his guides are knowledgeable and you can expect to see good numbers of deer, both mulies and whitetails.  He doesn’t have a website, so the only real way to locate him is through us, but he is the real deal when it comes to big mulies (and good whitetails too). Unfortunately, Alberta winters can be brutal, and a bad winter can seriously affect the size and numbers. Sometimes it is only to a localized area, other times a larger area. Currently as of 2025 Alberta estimates its mule deer population at about 140,000. That is in line with typical expectations population wise.  Currently you can expect to see 170”-class mule deer, but he has some 180s” as well. And he has produced much larger. He usually has a couple other guides out with him scouting and searching, to give you the best chance of bagging a whopper. These hunts are for diehard trophy hunters who are willing to pass up the big 160s to kill a brute, and are willing to eat “tag soup” if it doesn’t work out. Not everyone will succeed, but the trophy potential here is good, and most hunters will have a crack at decent buck; with a chance for much bigger.  Whiteails are more typically in the 130 to 150 range, again with a chance for much better. Very few hunters go home empty, although sizes are dependent on prior years winters.

The style of hunting for these mulies is spot (mainly by vehicle) and stalk, with plenty of glassing. The whitetail hunts can include stand hunting, spot and stalk, and even “pushing bush”, sometimes all in the same day – whatever it takes. They will be 130” and better, with high end bucks into the 160s always possible. He hunts both public “leased land” and hard-to-access private lands (including his own) in east-central Alberta, between Edmonton and Provost. The gun season runs the month of November.

Due to the exceptional trophy quality, muley hunts in Alberta have gotten quite expensive in recent years (and they won’t be getting any cheaper, so there is no better time to go than now), and this outfitter’s hunts are no exception, but these pictures of past clients deer are impressive.
