GIANT LAKE TROUT PLUS GRAYLING – NWT #283

GIANT LAKE TROUT PLUS GRAYLING – NWT #283

Welcome to the incredible Northwest Territories, where you can fish in July with the sun shining for 24 hours a day! These fabulous fishing trips include your float plane flight to and from the lodge, and that is a reel deal (pun intended)! Crystal-clear waters allow you to see 20- to 50-pound lake trout swimming below. For a changeup, fish the river for big, hungry grayling, the sailfish of the North. Even pike are available. AND THIS IS THE ONLY LODGE ON THIS 1,700-SQUARE MILE LAKE, SO THERE IS ALMOST ZERO FISHING PRESSURE!

Expect to catch lots of fish, lots of big fish (lakers to 50 pounds). You may even see caribou, musk ox, wolves, Arctic foxes and more. And choose your weapons: both conventional tackle and fly fishing are excellent choices for these big and uneducated leviathans (fly anglers must bring their own fishing gear). The average laker will be 15 to 30 pounds (but plenty 30-50 lbs.), and grayling can reach 5 pounds! NOTE: It takes decades to grow large lakers up here, so all trout over 10 lbs. are released (a few small ones are kept for shore lunches, or if you wish to take a couple home with you).

Forget what you thought you knew about fishing for lake trout, as the fishing here isn’t like fishing anywhere else. Due to the cold temperatures, trout can be found in shallow water (15’-25’) all summer long, making them the hardest-fighting, most aggressive freshwater fish you’ve battled. Here you will find some of the most satisfying fishing opportunities of your life, whether you choose to troll, fly fish or jig. The season runs from early July through early September. If you prefer the hard water season, however, they also offer some outstanding icefishing in the winter!

A typical day of fishing usually starts early (9:00 AM), with you and one other angler joining your guide in a 16-ft aluminum Lund or Crestliner boat. After a morning of wrestling some big fish, you will stop for a fresh fish shore lunch, followed by more fishing until your arms ache (30-50 fish days are common!). Stream fishing can be enjoyed too for big, feisty grayling. Then back to the 3,000- sq. ft. lodge around 6:00 PM for drinks, tall tales and a big dinner, followed by a hot shower and bed. If you wish, you can catch some more lakers and grayling from shore at the lodge after dinner.

GETTING THERE
You will fly into Yellowknife, Northwest Territories. There are usually daily flights into Yellowknife from several major Canadian cities. You will need to fly into Yellowknife the day before, as you will be boarding a charter flight (approx. 2 hours) to the lodge the next morning. Guests normally arrive for lunch, and spend the rest of the day settling in and getting ready for fishing the next morning. You will then have 5 full days of fishing, including your departure day, so you will need to spend another night in Yellowknife outbound, before catching your commercial flight home the next day.
